New book offers a practicum of movement working with breath to change rhythms and movement patterns to experience less pain

[ad_1]

News Image

Margaret J. Pittenger, MSPT announces her return into the publishing scene with the release of “Between Breath and Pain: Creating Sensory Awareness with Gentle Movement for Healing” (published by Archway Publishing), a health/diet/fitness book that integrates breath work with slow gentle balanced movement patterns that open channels of communication with pain.

The exercises in this book are not gym-style movements. The gentle movement is organized to enhance neural or brain learning and to use the symmetrical skeleton as a way to return to balanced movement across all the joints. All the exercises are written out and given in video format accessed by over 50 QR codes to demonstrate how these exercises improve breath and release pain across the body. The patterns in this book include the partnership of the whole body and the breath work across all the cells to create change in the brain and muscle partnerships. There is also a special section for pregnant women on breath and releasing pain.

“As you read about and use the movements I present in this book, please maintain a sense of self-awareness as you follow the rules I have laid out for the breath, the movements, and the practice. I ask you to practice the concept of ‘No Pain’ as you follow the movement patterns. This means to move slowly and remain aware of your movement so that there is no pain as you move. I believe when you practice the ‘No Pain’ method, you will find that your body is listening,” Pittenger says.

When asked what she wants readers to take away from the book, Pittenger answers, “our bodies come equipped with everything we need to be healthy, symmetrical and free from pain. Pain is often a learned entity and can be unlearned through breath work combined with slow, gentle researching of the brain’s expectations. As you move and breathe through this book, be gentle with yourself. Give yourself support. The moment you take a conscious outbreath is the start of pain-free living. Have hope!” For more details about the book, please visit https://www.archwaypublishing.com/en/bookstore/bookdetails/835915-between-breath-and-pain

Templeton Padilla has spent her career helping others tune in to hear God’s voice throughout the ordinary moments of their day and this work is no different.

Templeton Padilla shares, “Do you believe God speaks to you? What if you could sit down with God? What would you say to Him? What questions would you ask Him? Most importantly, what would He say to you? Would you be willing to enter the conversation?

“Dear Child, I AM God, your Heavenly Father. I AM the one Who knows you inside and out: your past, your present, and your future. I know all your thoughts even before you do. I know when you are filled with joy and peace, and I know when you are anxious and sad.

“My heart is so filled with love for you as you turn to me for help. I fully understand and know your conflicted heart, and I love you despite all your challenges: your disappointments and sorrows, your hesitations, and your fears. How I wait for you to release them to Me once and for all. I must ask you, My precious soul, what do you believe?”

Heart N Hands, Celebrating its 8th Year, Expands Its Annual “Running for the Heart” 5K Run/Walk to Houston and Virtually

[ad_1]

Heart N Hands

People of all fitness levels are welcome to participate in the 5K Race.

The Running for the Heart event is all about loving your heart and keeping fit while encouraging our communities to develop heart-healthy habits for life — Essence Banks

Nonprofit group Heart N Hands is holding their third annual “Running for the Heart” 5K Run/Walk/Bike in person on Saturday, September 17, in New Orleans and Houston and virtually, from September 17 – 19. “Running for the Heart” will celebrate Heart N Hands’ eighth year anniversary this year and raise funds to educate girls aged 10-18 about heart health and disease prevention. The 5K’s starting line in New Orleans will be at the Bayou St. John area at Wisner across from Pan Am Stadium in New Orleans. The Houston affiliate will hold its first annual in-person race on September 17, 2022. Due to its popularity in 2020, Heart N Hands will continue its virtual 5K from September 16 to 18. Participants can register for the event at https://www.heartnhands.org.

Heart N Hands started its annual run to further its mission of educating young women on better heart health. “‘Running for the Heart’ 5K is about loving your heart and staying fit during this time to develop great heart-healthy habits for life,” said Founder and President Essence Banks, “Running, walking, and/or biking can bring us together as a community to get our hearts pumping, give to a worthy cause, and allow us to have fun!” The annual race offers the perfect opportunity to get out, enjoy the beautiful weather and show your heart some love.

Heart N Hands ask that everyone who registers for the race complete the 5K (3.1 miles) by foot or on a bike on September 17, then post photos, videos, and stories to their social media tagging #heartnhands and #runningfortheheart to spread the word about the importance of heart health. On top of contributing to a non-profit organization that makes heart health education available to so many young women, Heart N Hands wants to encourage participants to celebrate their personal accomplishments and deepen their love and appreciation for their hearts.

While celebrating Heart N Hand’s 8th anniversary, Running for the Heart helps maintain the focus on fighting the number one killer of women, heart disease. “The Running for the Heart event is all about loving your heart and keeping fit while encouraging our communities to develop heart healthy habits for life,” said Banks, “This year, now more than ever, we have to take charge of our health and get moving. Coming together as a community, virtually or in-person, will empower young girls to get their own hearts pumping and will bring awareness to a great cause.”

Heart N Hands wants to stress that individuals of all fitness levels are welcome to participate. The tax-deductible 5K registration fee is $25 for all participants. Registrants for the in-person 5k will receive plenty of swag (official 5K T-Shirt, water bottle, race bib, and finisher gifts/prizes) at the race location. Virtual 5K participants will have signature t-shirts and goodies mailed to the registered address provided. To learn more about the event or to register, please visit heartnhands.org.

Founded in 2014 by heart disease survivor Essence Harris Banks, Heart N Hands began as a Louisiana nonprofit organization. Since then, the nonprofit has expanded its reach nationally to affiliate chapters in Nashville and Memphis, TN, and is proud to announce its newest affiliate in Houston, TX. Through their Houston outreach, Heart N Hands hopes to continue its mission of educating over 6500 women and their families in partnership with the American Heart Association.

In addition to the annual run, Heart N Hands regularly hosts fitness and wellness sessions full of activities to promote heart health, including Zumba, yoga, high-intensity interval training, and mindfulness meditation. Their partnership with No Kid Hungry led to the creation of “Fruit Friday,” which provided over 400 area children in need with fresh fruit and a dose of heart health education. The nonprofit has also partnered with Girl Scouts Louisiana East to design and offer a “Love Your Heart” patch that over 100 scouts have earned.

The organization aims to promote better heart health in women through its comprehensive, interactive sessions where young women can learn more about taking care of the heart and the specific risk factors for women. These sessions provide instruction on the importance of daily physical activity, heart-healthy cooking demos, grocery store tours, and food label education. CPR training is also a staple of this preventative approach to heart health, in addition to discussing the cardiac impact of smoking, drinking alcohol, and other substance abuse. Heart N Hands has trained over 300 girls in hands-only CPR through their initiatives.

In February, Heart N Hands celebrated American Heart Month with its “Know Your Four” campaign, intended to educate on heart disease’s four major risk factors. The nonprofit also provides scholarship fund awards to graduating High School Seniors in each chapter’s area.

“Heart N Hands has the potential to be a major positive influence on the future women, as our adolescent girls are empowered with awareness and tips for prevention of time sensitive killers – heart disease and stroke. The cycle of premature disease, disability, and death can be broken,” said Sheryl Martin-Schild, MD, PhD, FANA, FAHA, FAAN, Stroke Medical of Neurology & Stroke (Touro Infirmary and New Orleans East Hospital), Director for Louisiana

Emergency Response Network and Heart N Hands Board Member.

Heart N Hands is a nonprofit organization based in New Orleans whose mission is to spread heart health awareness, prevention, and education for young girls in our community. For more information, you can visit https://www.heartnhands.org/.

Research from The Fenway Institute Shows That Bans on Gender-Affirming Medical Care for Youth Have Far-Reaching Repercussions for Clinicians

[ad_1]

Blue box Fenway Health logo with white text

Bringing political ideology into clinical practice puts providers in a position of having to violate the most basic standard of care, which is to do no harm.

A Viewpoint published in JAMA Pediatrics asserts that the numerous bills filed in 2021 and 2022 seeking to block access to gender-affirming care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents have far-reaching repercussions for clinicians who work in gender-affirming care and for the broader medical community. The potential effects on clinicians include decline in personal health and well-being in addition to professional implications ranging from loss of licensure and income to criminal prosecution. The broader medical community faces the prospect of seeing fewer clinicians enter the field of transgender health as well as a sharp reduction in the current workforce dedicated to providing gender-affirming care.

“Much of the response to these bills, which includes advocacy to defeat them, rightly focuses on the devastating effects they are having on TGD youth and their families,” said senior author Dr. Alex S. Keuroghlian, who directs the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute and the Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Gender Identity Program. “In addition, the potential for personal and professional harm to clinicians is significant and should also be a part of this conversation.”

The professional implications of these bans, and the hostile climate they foster, includes harassment and threats of violence. Other professional concerns include the potential for criminal prosecution if clinical practice violates the legal bans on gender-affirming care, the need to hire legal counsel to ensure that clinical care is provided within legal boundaries, potential loss of professional licensure, and loss of income for having to curtail clinical practice or close it altogether.

The greatest effect on clinicians, however, is the moral distress engendered by being constrained from providing care that follows widely accepted pediatric guidelines and knowing that the failure to provide care will likely result in acute mental health crises among their patients.

“Bringing political ideology into clinical practice puts providers in a position of having to violate the most basic standard of care, which is to do no harm,” added Keuroghlian. “Following these laws will require clinicians to violate professional codes of ethics and take action that will almost surely harm the health of their young patients.”

“This push to block access to gender-affirming care may cause some clinicians to leave the field of transgender care altogether and discourage current medical and nursing students, residents, fellows, and other trainees from pursuing careers in transgender health,” said lead author Allysa Warling, B.A. of Harvard Medical School.

The Viewpoint offered three actions to mitigate the potential damage of bills and laws that seek to block access to gender-affirming care:

  • Standardize training in gender-affirming care across undergraduate and graduate medical education and all health care professional curricula;
  • Disseminate comprehensive, evidence-based clinical guidelines for increasing access to adolescent gender-affirming care; and
  • Advocate for protection of adolescent gender-affirming care through state and federal policies beyond the necessary, yet insufficient, statements by health care professional associations.

“Clinician-Level Implications of Bans on Gender-Affirming Medical Care for Youth in the US” was published online by JAMA Pediatrics on August 8, 2022. It is available here.

Amprion Exhibits at MDS International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid and Presents Scientific Insights On SYNTap® Test at Prion2022

[ad_1]

News Image

“The SYNTap Test fills the void for a highly sensitive and specific clinical diagnostics tool” -Amprion Chief Scientific Officer Claudio Soto, Ph.D.

Amprion, a leader in diagnostics for neurodegenerative diseases, invites researchers and practitioners attending MDS to visit Amprion at booth #212. We look forward to discussing how the SYNTap® Biomarker Test addresses the unmet medical need for a validated clinical test to diagnose Parkinson’s disease (PD) and differentiate PD from atypical Parkinson’s at early stages. Accurate and early diagnosis helps accelerate personalized treatment and therapeutic innovations.

The urgent medical need for accurate, early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases is growing as the global population ages. For every thousand individuals, 1 to 2 persons are impacted by Parkinson’s. PD’s prevalence increases with age, affecting 1% of the population aged 60 and above. Globally, about 10 million people may be afflicted by PD.

Amprion’s SYNTap Biomarker Test helps physicians diagnose and differentiate complex and often confusing neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s, Lewy Body Variant of Alzheimer’s Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment with Lewy Bodies, and Multiple System Atrophy. The Company’s proprietary detection technology, Seed Amplification Assay (SAA), accurately detects misfolded α-Synuclein aggregates, a crucial biomarker associated with these devastating conditions.

“The SYNTap Test fills the void for a highly sensitive and specific clinical diagnostics tool,” said Amprion Chief Scientific Officer Claudio Soto, Ph.D., who will speak at Prion2022, September 13-16 in Göttingen, Germany. According to Russ Lebovitz, MD/Ph.D, Amprion CEO, “A confident diagnosis helps optimize personalized treatment and disease management strategies for people living with Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders.” Dr. Lebovitz will attend MDS, International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, September 15-18.

Amprion will host a Meet the Expert session in which attendees can discuss scientific insights on how the SYNTap Test performs in a clinical setting.

MEET THE EXPERT – Friday, Sept. 15TH – 10 am to 12 pm – Booth #212

Neurologist Brit Mollenhauer, MD, specializes in Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders and is head of translational research at the Paracelsus-Elena Klinik (PEKK) in Germany. She has developed a study center for clinical trials and translational research and works closely with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

“The SAA developed by Amprion offers a highly accurate detection of misfolded Synuclein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which can be diagnostic for patients suspected of having Parkinson’s, Lewy Body Dementia, and Multiple System Atrophy, all of which are Synuclein Aggregation Disorders.”

Dr. Mollenhauer will discuss the value of Amprion’s SYNTap Test in the early identification of Synucleinopathy based on her studies: “We have shown that in one of our patient cohorts with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), a prodromal condition for Synuclein Aggregation Disorders, the SYNTap Test can detect misfolded Synuclein at least a decade prior to the time a clinical diagnosis of Synuclein Aggregation Disorders can be made.”

We look forward to connecting with you at MDS booth #212.

Download the SYNTap Test Specification Sheet.

ABOUT AMPRION

A leader in Prion Detection Science™, Amprion innovates biomarker testing for brain diseases. Our SYNTap® Biomarker Test aids in diagnosing Parkinson’s Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and Lewy Body Variant of Alzheimer’s. Amprion has been granted FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for detecting misfolded Synuclein in CSF. We strive to accelerate personalized medicine for neurodegenerative diseases through molecular testing.

Power Planter Launches ‘Heidi’s Hope Box’ to Bring Awareness to Early Breast Cancer Detection

[ad_1]

We hope to make a difference in someone’s life by empowering them to learn about their breast density in hopes of saving their life

Did you know breast density makes it harder to find breast cancer on mammograms and it is a significant risk factor for developing breast cancer? These facts are widely proven yet not commonly known. When found early, breast cancer is curable, but by late stage (stage 4), it is not.

Power Planter, Heidi Punke Brown, and My Density Matters seek to change that together.

“My breast cancer was found at a late stage,” says Heidi Punke Brown, breast cancer thriver and long-time friend of Greg Niewold, owner of Power Planter. “It is my hope that we can spread the word about breast density and early detection so no one else has a diagnosis delayed due to their breast density.”

An estimated 26 million women in the United States with dense breasts are underserved by a mammography alone, leaving those women at risk for breast cancer to grow and spread.

Together with the organization, My Density Matters, grower Abbott-Ipco, Inc, Heidi and Greg created Heidi’s Hope Box to educate people on early breast cancer detection. Each box contains a 3’x 7” pink bulb Power Planter auger, ten (10) pink tulip bulbs, a memoir by Leslie Ferris Yerger (Founder of My Density Matters), a note from Heidi, bulb planting tips, and information on breast density and breast cancer screening. Power Planter will donate $25 from the sale of each $59.99 box to My Density Matters.

“Heidi was the inspiration behind Heidi’s Hope Box,” says Greg Niewold, owner of Power Planter. “Shortly after her diagnosis, I gave her one of our bulb augers so she and her family could plant bulbs as a way of planting hope for her future.”

My Density Matters empowers women to find their breast density, learn their options, and take charge of their breast cancer screening. They are addressing the “how” for earlier diagnosis with an initiative to move from awareness to education to action.

Their Check Your Chart™ initiative empowers women to obtain their mammogram report from their online patient portal, learn their breast density, communicate with their doctor(s) about the results, and collaborate on additional screening options to find cancer earlier by providing them with tools for more informed conversations.

“We hope to make a difference in someone’s life by empowering them to learn about their breast density in hopes of saving their life,” added Niewold.

Pick up a Heidi’s Hope Box here. Contact Stacey Pierson for interviews: stacey@gardenmediagroup.com or 610-444-3040.

Power Planter is a third-generation, family-owned auger company located on a centennial farm in rural Illinois. Our founder, Wayne Niewold, invented the first garden-friendly earth auger more than 30 years ago, and now we manufacture and sell more than 25 sizes and models.
