Jefferson Partners with NeuroFlow to Support Holistic Health of Employees and Students

NeuroFlow, the market leader in technology and services for behavioral health integration, is now available to 42,000 employees of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health.

The initiative will focus on increasing access to behavioral health resources and daily self-care for employees, faculty and students across Jefferson’s university, clinical and corporate services settings. NeuroFlow’s evidenced-based platform will engage with those working on the frontlines by providing tailored content, regular surveys, exercises, and crisis resources, depending on individual needs.

“Healthcare and education providers can often overlook their own quality of life in the service of others, but we are committed to being there for them, just as they always are for us. This program will ensure that those who want to measure their overall health can do so in a meaningful, confidential way,” said NeuroFlow CEO Chris Molaro. “We’re proud to expand our work with Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, an organization that understands the importance of mental health in the workplace and the needs of its employees and students.”

NeuroFlow, which was originally implemented in patient care settings by Jefferson Health’s clinical staff in 2019 and offered to all Thomas Jefferson University students this past summer, tracks outcomes and provides remote support with a care management system to close the gap between mental and physical health. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for mental health awareness while also increasing rates of burnout among healthcare workers. As a result, Jefferson recognized an opportunity to expand the use of technology to support its employee population. Leaders from across the organization, including those in clinical and academic settings and the human resources department, are working toward a larger “holistic health” program being introduced to faculty and employees over the next several months.

“COVID-19 challenged healthcare workers across the world like we have never seen in our lifetimes,” said Bruce A. Meyer, MD, MBA, President of Jefferson Health. “NeuroFlow is a creative, technology-driven solution with proven positive mental health outcomes that our employees can access on their cell phones or tablets. This was something our employees asked for, and we believe this partnership, in addition to an expanded program for prioritizing holistic health and well-being, can make a true difference whether on the job or at home with family members.”

Thomas Jefferson University Provost Mark L. Tykocinski, MD, added: “While the college experience can be stressful, COVID-19 brought a unique set of challenges for our students, and our faculty and staff. Having an application-based technology for holistic health is important because it’s how our students learn and interface with systems. We have found that NeuroFlow is an important complement to our Student Counseling Center offerings.”

NeuroFlow enables Jefferson employees, faculty and students to manage their health privately and autonomously, using tools available around the clock to support their schedules. Each user experience is personalized based on a combination of their preferences, AI algorithms, and how they respond to different mental and physical health assessments. Employees can complete activities such as breathing exercises, watch curated videos, and choose to track daily mental and physical health vitals, such as mood, sleep, and steps.

Early pilot results from 1,000 beta users were positive, with users completing an average of 20 activities in the first month. In addition, at least 500 Thomas Jefferson University students have taken advantage of this resource within the past five months. The initial success contributed to the decision to roll out NeuroFlow across the entire employee population.

Global Wellness Award Recipients

The Debra Simon Award for Leader in Furthering Mental Wellness was presented to Christine Clinton by GWS Advisory Board Member, C. This award is sponsored by the Debra Simon Family Foundation.

The Leading Woman in Wellness Award was presented to Sue Friedland, who co-founded SuperSmartHealth with her late husband, Dr. Danny Friedland. The award was presented by GWS Advisory Board Member, Nicola Finley, MD, with presenting sponsor Natura Bissé International, Inc. Finley commented that Sue is among those unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to advance health and wellness among us all. Quoting Nelson Mandela: “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.”

ICI’s New Biorisk Platform Helps Organizations Protect their Workforces from Biorisk Threats

News Image

“Our platform helps organizations keep their people safe and their operations running smoothly,” said ICI CEO Gary Strahan.

To help businesses, agencies and healthcare providers protect their people from biorisk threats, Infrared Cameras Incorporated (ICI) today unveiled its new Biorisk Cloud Platform. Combining infrared technology and a proprietary, cloud-based data management solution, ICI helps organizations across industries report and manage biorisk, such as COVID-19, to avoid potential safety incidents and operational disruptions.

With accurate, real-time temperature readings, ICI’s platform streams data from thermal cameras to ICI’s proprietary cloud platform to identify biorisk patterns and threats before they cause operational issues like facility closures or shuttering of distribution centers. The cloud platform, supported by Amazon Web Services, can be readily integrated into an organization’s current business intelligence and operational platforms to help enhance reporting and improve safety and operational processes.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations have realized tens of millions of lost operational hours due to outbreaks within their facilities,” said Gary Strahan, Chief Executive Officer at ICI. “Unfortunately, with new variants, including the extremely contagious Omicron variant, organizations will continue to be at risk of COVID-19 outbreaks within their facilities for years to come. Fortunately, ICI has developed a solution.”

According to the CDC, fever is the most common symptom of COVID-19 and is present in nearly 80% of cases. Through immediate, accurate identification of febrile individuals, organizations are able to mitigate exposure to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

“With nearly 90% of workers admitting to going to work while potentially infectious, outbreaks within organizations have become commonplace leading to employee downtime, lower outputs, and a negative impact to an organization’s bottom line. Our platform helps organizations keep their people safe and their operations running smoothly,” said Strahan.

Texas Children’s Hospital, one of the largest and most comprehensive specialty pediatric hospitals in the U.S., is using ICI’s Biorisk Cloud Platform for temperature screening across its hospital, clinic and specialty care center locations.

“Providing extra protection for everyone in our facilities, we have deployed thirty cameras for screening employees across our buildings, tracking temperatures to help prevent anyone with COVID-19 from entering,” said Bert Gumeringer, Senior Vice President of Facilities Operations, Texas Children’s Hospital. “This type of screening is now a way of life. ICI is making it a smooth and efficient process for us and employee response has been fantastic.”

ICI’s platform is catered to an organization’s structure and processes, allowing them to communicate the most relevant data to each user.

Key features of the platform include:

  • Real-time, automated notifications;
  • Multifaceted analytics based on proprietary AI algorithms
  • Customizable dashboards;
  • Ability to set benchmarks and identify deviations before they cause disruptions; and
  • Seamless integration with your organization’s current systems and processes including most access control and Video Management Systems (VMS)

From design and implementation to calibration and training, ICI expert technicians service and educate customers every step of the way.

AONN+ Voices Opposition to Radiation Oncology Reimbursement Cuts

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) signed a letter in support of other advocacy organizations urging congressional leaders to pass legislation to prevent massive Medicare payment cuts to radiation oncology.

As part of its policy changes for calendar year 2022, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed to cut radiation oncology reimbursement by approximately 8% (or nearly $150 million) under the Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) and by $150 million under the Radiation Oncology Alternative Payment Model (RO Model).

These changes have met with opposition from the medical community, with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) leading the effort calling on CMS to reconsider its decisions. Dave Adler, ASTRO’s Vice President of Advocacy, described the impact these payment cuts would have on practices:

  • They will have difficulty financially supporting the sophisticated technology
  • High-skill staff essential for a modern radiation therapy clinic could not be supported
  • Practices treating underserved populations will be hit hardest

There would also be a potential negative impact on access to high-quality radiation oncology care:

  • Reduce access to high-quality care close to patients’ homes. Community-based practices will experience payment instability
  • Exacerbate healthcare disparities in cancer treatment among rural and minority populations
  • Patients could present with more advanced stage disease requiring more expensive treatment

AONN+ leaders believe the payment cuts have the potential to exacerbate healthcare disparities as people are still struggling through the pandemic.

Jamie Callahan, Chair of the AONN+ Policy & Advocacy Committee, said, “This directly impacts patients, and one committee member pointed out that with more late-stage diagnoses due to COVID delays, radiation will be more important as a treatment modality. We should do everything we can to make sure patients are still able to access this treatment.”

This collective voice of AONN+ supports a core competency of navigation to assist patients in accessing cancer care and navigating healthcare systems. Navigators assess barriers to care and engage patients and families in creating potential solutions to financial, practical, and social challenges.

Since 2014, CMS has explored potential ways to test an episode-based payment model for radiotherapy services. According to a summary on the CMS website, the proposed RO Model would test whether making site-neutral payments to physician practices, including free-standing radiation therapy centers, would reduce Medicare expenditures while “preserving or enhancing the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries.”

As a result of disruptions during the pandemic, the model’s planned implementation has been extended twice. The new start date of the model is January 1, 2022.

Cerebral Raises $300 Million in Series C Funding to Democratize Mental Health

Cerebral logo

“With this new fundraise, Cerebral is uniquely positioned to be the one-stop shop for high-quality mental health care as we provide care for a wide range of conditions and provide multiple treatment modalities including medication management, therapy, and digital therapeutics.”

Cerebral Inc., the leading online mental health company, announced the close of its $300 million Series C round led by the SoftBank Vision Fund 2. The round also included participation from new and existing investors, including Prysm Capital, Access Industries, WestCap Group, and ARTIS Ventures. Having launched less than two years ago, this round brings the company’s total funding to $462 million.

Cerebral is a one-stop shop for comprehensive, high-quality online mental health care and wellness. The company offers counseling, therapy, and medication delivery and management online for mental and behavioral health conditions such as depression, anxiety, serious mental illnesses, substance use disorder, nutrition, and more.

Exacerbated by the pandemic, mental health facilities have experienced severe capacity constraints with many patients waiting 3 to 4 months for appointments with a psychiatrist or a therapist. Cerebral has a team of over 2,000 clinicians practicing across all 50 states allowing Cerebral to dramatically cut wait times compared to traditional mental health providers. Cerebral further improves accessibility to its mental health services through partnerships with major insurance providers such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Magellan, and Medicare, as well as a growing number of employers. It was the accessibility and diversity of Cerebral’s clinicians that caught the attention of Simone Biles, world champion gymnast, who joined the company as its Chief Impact Officer in October.

Aligning with its mission to improve access to high-quality, long-term mental health care, Cerebral is investing in new service offerings, strategic partnerships, international expansion, and M&A opportunities to further solidify its position as the one-stop shop for behavioral care and to provide top-quality treatment options through data science and precision medicine. Strategically, the company will continue to dedicate attention to its growing base of direct-to-consumer members and accelerate its value-based care relationships with insurance providers and employers.

“Our rapid growth is a testament to the dedication that the Cerebral team has to our mission: to transform access to high-quality mental health care. We wish to build a world where anyone, regardless of their situation, can feel comfortable coming forward to get the mental health treatment they need and not be burdened by barriers like stigma, cost, and convenience,” said Kyle Robertson, founder and CEO of Cerebral. “With this new fundraise, Cerebral is uniquely positioned to be the one-stop shop for high-quality mental health care as we provide care for a wide range of conditions and provide multiple treatment modalities including medication management, therapy, and digital therapeutics. It is still just the beginning for Cerebral.”

“Roughly half of the American population is affected by mental health issues. However, obstacles like cost, limited provider availability and fear of judgement remain in the way of getting the treatment they need,” said Priya Saiprasad, Partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers. “We believe that Cerebral is lowering the barriers to mental health care with an integrated platform combining therapy, counselling, and medication management for effective, long-term support. We are excited to partner with Kyle Robertson and the team to support their mission to improve access to high-quality mental healthcare for all.”

About Cerebral

Cerebral’s mission is to improve access to long-term, high-quality mental health care to everyone who needs it.
